The low light CCTV camera comes in 2 forms, either the traditional body cameras that need to be placed in housing if going outdoors, or one of the more modern Vandal Resistant Domes which can be internal or external with no additional housing. Both work the same way utilizing any ambient light at low light levels without the need for any built in IR (infra red) illumination.

These are usually the preferred choice for low light environments such as Pubs and Clubs, or city and town centers when there is an abundance of ambient street lamps and shop lighting at night. However they also have a much more useful function when the question comes up of capturing vehicle number plates.

As this technology does not use its own IR illumination it will not suffer from IR bounce back, providing a clear image rather than a reflective white haze in place of the number plate. The one big disadvantage however that if the area you are trying to monitor is in complete darkness then you really won’t see much at all.

As the name of the Security camera suggests this technology allow the user to see at night with the use of its own built in Infra Red (IR) illumination. These cameras can see different distances depending on the quantity and intensity of the IR bulbs used, this cam be from as little as 5 meters all the way up to 100m + in complete darkness.

The IR light that is omitted cannot be detected by the human eye, the only clue you will get is that is looking directly at the camera you will be able to see a very faint red glow but nothing more. When looking at the footage though a monitor you will get quite a different picture, a well illuminated black & white image showing up surprisingly good detail.

If you’re trying to be covert then maybe you will feel the infra red gives away the position of a camera, arguably though this kind of security camera will be more of a deterrent which surely is the whole point of having a Camera system.

The downsides to this tech are only a few, obviously you will struggle to capture number plates due to the chance of IR bounce back, and an image can be over exposed if the camera you are using has a much greater IR range than the distance of the object you are monitoring.

In conclusion, no one tech is really better than the other, both are very good in their own right and one will not dominate the other in the future. Both technologies will continue to be developed to improve upon the generation before. The CCTV cameras choice will almost always be determined by the environment in which it is to be situated.

The Police Department has installed 108 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor activities in Colombo City in order to enhance national security; Police Media Spokesman Prishantha Jayakody was quoted as saying by the Defense Ministry’s web portal.

These CCTV cameras had been installed at vantage points in the city for the purpose, he said. This is a national requirement and the Ministry of Defense has given the necessary directives to carry out the project.

“The CCTV cameras would help to reduce traffic offences, crime, and all nefarious activities taking place in Colombo City once they are activated”, he had said.

Security cameras are commonly connected to a security monitor with a BNC connector. These monitors are expensive and can only be used in security applications. However, you can connect your TV to your security cameras by using an adapter and a video switcher and switch between four or more camera with the switcher.

You will ask: How do I monitor a security camera on cable TV?  First, you should need the BNC-to-RCA adapter, RCA male-to-male cable and video switcher. Below are the steps to tell you how to connect it.

• Connect your security camera outputs to the video switcher inputs.
• Connect the BNC-to-RCA adapter to the video switcher output. Many switchers have two outputs, you can use the second output to record to a DVR or a VCR.  However, you will not be recording all four cameras at the same time. Your recorder will record only what is displayed on your TV. You also can use the second output to display your cameras on another TV.
• Connect one end of the RCA male-to-male cable to the BNC-to-RCA adapter and the other end to the video input of your TV that has the yellow connection port.
• Turn on the video switcher.
• Turn on your TV and use your remote control or menu button to navigate to the menu that allows you to select the video input. Select the input that you plugged the RCA cable into, either AUX 1, 2 or 3 or Line In.
• Adjust the dwell time

Keep in mind that some switchers come with a remote control to allow you to set the dwell time or display one particular camera on your TV. You should buy a switcher that has an RF remote control because a standard IR remote control is line-of-sight only If you want to be able to control the switcher from another room.

Federal Member for Wide Bay, Warren truss today announced that a Coalition Government will provide up to $150,000 to the Gympie Regional Council to increase their network of closed circuit television cameras in and around Gympie.

“Residents want to feel safe and secure in their homes and neighborhoods.   Whether people are going about their business, shopping, out to dinner with friends or enjoying a night out, CCTV cameras will provide an extra layer of security to help protect them and their property from crime,” Mr. Truss said.

“The presence of CCTV cameras causes would be criminals to think before they act, helping to stop crime before it occurs, as the chance of them getting caught on camera is high.

“A Coalition Government will support real action in Gympie to prevent crime by assisting the Gympie Regional Council to extend its network of CCTV cameras through the National Community Crime Prevention Program (NCCPP).

“Labor went soft on crime after their mismanagement and wasteful spending resulted in funding cuts to essential programs aimed at preventing crime, in yet another demonstration that Labor has its priorities wrong,” Mr. Truss said.

“The re-establishment of the former Coalition Government’s NCCPP will enhance community safety and prevent crime through the installation of CCTV and other security measures.  Funding can also be provided to local councils to combat graffiti and vandalism.

“The National Community Crime Prevention Program was a popular grassroots initiative that provided real protection to local communities. The program should never have been scrapped by the Rudd-Gillard Labor Government,” Mr. Truss said.

“In contrast, the Coalition will support real action to prevent crime and make communities safer.”
